Blimey, this apartment ain't 'alf large. Are they all like this? Can't get use t'havin' this much space. Wonder if Beast'd mind me sharin' her room. Real different from the tents. It's weird them bein' so high up too. Glad I've got a good head fer heights or I'd feel right strange. Nice of this place t'give us somewhere t'stay though, never thought I'd live somewhere like this.

T'other day, that was one of the curses, right? Frightened me stiff, all that noise an' fightin'. It was 'orrible, hope they ain't all like that.

Right, I wanted t'ask, someone told me there's an orphanage 'ere. Anyone knows who I can talk to 'bout givin' an 'and there maybe?

Yeah, I was. Right shock, too, endin' up in the middle o' the City like that.

[She smiles at her - Beast is one of the few people Doll feels alright with letting touch that side of her face.]

Only a couple of days. Nah, it ain't your fault. Nothin' t'be done about it, really.

[Fretting, just a bit more, before she pulled her hand back, idly fussing with a few strands of her own hair, distracting things, nothing of any real value]

Bit 'ard t'describe. Lots o' this...[hesitating over the word] techn'logy stuff everywhere. People 'ere 'ave been real nice t'me so far too. An' it's real well looked after, an' no one even tried t'get me t'move on when I was stayin' outside.

[Stopping to think for a bit over what else she could say about the place, her visible eye on Beast worrying with her hair.]

Ain't always this good though. Sometimes weird stuff 'appens. Weirder than this, I mean. They call 'em curses. Right b'fore you got 'ere there was one, lots of people ended up fightin' but no one was gettin' 'urt, or at least if they was, it didn't stick.

[She listens, somewhat sullen, sinking back on to the simple bed the apartments provided- and yet something like that was still so nice by their standards, fingers smoothing over sheets]

Curses... an' this place is supposed to... what? Just bring people here?

[She sits down next to her, hands on her knees, raising her shoulders in a small shrug.]

Yeah, guess so. S'all I can understand 'bout it. Dunno 'ow it happens, it just does.

[Silence, before Beast just seems to sag a bit, flopping down on her stomach, her face tucked in the crook of her elbow]

If Dagger 'n the rest don't hurry up and get here-

[If, her mouth trembled with the words, her worry too evident. It had just seemed all wrong, that mansion, and-]

Beast...

[She leans over her, worried too, hand placed gently on her shoulder.]

...'ere, don't worry, nothin's goin' t'happen t'them. Bet they'll be 'ere b'fore we know it!

[A slightly forced smile, while actually she's chewing on the inside of her lip.]

You'll be back t'beatin' Dagger off of ya again in no time.

He's such an idiot-

[But it doesn't come out vitriolic in the least, if anything, regretful, nestling a bit in to the sheets- tired, but she doesn't like admitting it]

They better not be wastin' any time lookin' for me. Pointless, if I'm here...

Yeah... [agreeing more with the sentiment behind the words than with the words themselves.]

'm sure they know what they're doin'.

[She doesn't point out that they wouldn't know that Beast was safe. She's sure Beast knows that well enough.

She rubs Beast's back gently, the way Beast used to do for her when she was younger and couldn't sleep.]

Why don't ya 'ave a bit of a rest? S'been a long day.

[For the love of- Beast was disappointed, not just with herself before, but herself now- having to be comforted, when she should be the one being strong for Doll-]

[She did manage to make it come out like a tease, even as she had her eyes half closed.

And it was childish, and useless, but she half wanted Doll to stay, because Joker had said we'll talk later.]

[Doll chuckles a bit.]

Ain't goin' t'say no t'that.

[Especially if it's the way to make sure Beast herself gets some rest. Doll slides off the bed onto the floor, resting her back against the side of the bed and folding her arms behind her head.]

We'll work all o'this out soon.

[She says it in a hushed voice in case Beast has already started to fall asleep.]

[She has, slowly tugging off a few things, the flower out of her hair, loosening the ties on her outfit, but- She almost goes to pull the scarf from her neck, but can't quite bear to]

Nn-

[A soft groan, not even wanting to bother with her leg, she'll keep it on for now, more aware of the seal on her thigh than ever, dragging herself under the covers]

Get off the floor, Doll, c'mon.

[Because- ... she was family. And- Maybe, just a little, also because Joker wouldn't bring up Black around her. Not when Beast was sure he had an idea]

Y'sure you comfortable like that?

[referring to her leg, mostly, but also asking if she minds sharing with her. Doll's always reminding herself that just because she needs to be close to them to feel safe, it doesn't necessarily mean they wanted to be crowded all the time.]

[No, she wasn't, really, but- it was harder to get close to most people, without that leg, and yet... well. A few more minutes wouldn't hurt, and Doll... Doll had seen her without it more than enough]

[Grumbled, almost, dragging herself half up over the other side of the bed, one hand undoing the prosthesis as her other patted a spot beside her]

Jus' for tonight, one time opportunity, ya know.

Jus' for t'night then!

[Trying, and mostly succeeding, to ignore the question of how she's going to be able to get to sleep on the other nights. But that could be dealt with later.

She took the offered spot, lying down and making sure the left side of her face is pressed against the pillow. She couldn't exactly be sure her hair would keep her scars covered while she was sleeping.]

[Beast called it a one-time offer, but in this place? She had an aching feeling she might extend it, even if- Well. It wouldn't keep Joker at bay for long, not if he knew. ... not if he knew.]

Mm.

[Even among their own, the scarred and damaged, they each had their own shames, their own habits. Beast lay her prostheses down gently, shifting back in to the bed carefully, laying down just as gingerly before she tugged the sheet back up, her right leg laid over her left's remnant, tucking it under in pale disguise of her lack, only then letting her eyes fall shut]

... 'night.

[She gives her sister a smile then, even though her eyes are already closed.]

'night, Beast.

[And then, very softly, hardly intelligible]

[For being there, for not pushing Doll away. For letting her be safe with her family again, even in a place as strange as this.]

[Beast didn't answer because- Well, there was no need. Doll was always welcome, and she never needed to thank her for it. They'd all been through too much together.

Her only response was a slight curl, just enough that where she rested, her shoulder touched against Doll's back. Just enough to be a warmth, drifting off to sleep]
